Ker & Downey Camps

Footsteps Camp Ngamiland Botswana

Main accommodation Botswana

Enter one of the great, untamed regions of Africa, the spectacular Okavango Delta, and experience the astonishing contrasts created when the mighty Okavango River flows into the arid Kalahari Desert. The result is a variety of habitats, riverine forest, palm islands, permanent swamps and dry sandveld all with an unparalleled wealth of diversity among species. This Ker and Downey program maintains the elegance and eccentricity of the original African safaris under canvas. The emphasis is on exploring this breathtakingly beautiful and diverse environment as the first African explorers did, in mokoros and on foot. A short trip in light aircraft wings you into the wilderness, where you meet your guides. The spectacle begins immediately as you drive across the floodplains and through the rivers to the camp. On route you are likely to see a variety of game from the semi aquatic antelope known as the lechwe to the playful and humorous warthog that runs along with tail in the air like a radio antennae. Prepare to enter another world where excitement and breathtaking beauty await your every step.

The camp is located on the edge of a beautiful lagoon where the ever present and highly vocal hippos wallow. Each tent is shaded by magnificent evergreen trees including African ebony and magosteen. Both lions and wild dogs are often seen in the area and the variety of plains game includes kudu, tssebe, zebra, and impala. Depending on the flood level you'll be able to take a ride in a mokoro (dugout canoe), in which you travel through the maze of channels winding their way through the papyrus and water lilies. Accommodations are in specially designed twin bedded, insect proof tents with double fly sheets with sewn-in floors. Each tent has its own bucket shower and bush toilet, and a daily laundry service is provided. The bush kitchen, run by host chef, who has many years experience working in the wilderness, will astound you. The high standard of bush cuisine, includes fresh fruits and vegetables, and selections of cheeses and South African wines as well as a stocked bar, soft drinks and bottled water … and of course plenty of ice!
The whole program is designed to insure an authentic bush experience while never compromising on comfort. Ker & Downey and especially the staff at Footsteps provide an excellent safari that leaves you with many fond memories of your fleeting glimpse of the Africa of old. Footsteps Across the Delta is a truly unique way to experience the African wilderness. No special skills or training are required. Distances walked and times of activities are flexible. Walks need not cover huge distances to have a rewarding experience, due to the diversity of the ecosystem. To be sure, it is a leisurely exploration, not a hike!
