Francolino Camp Twyfelfontein |
At Twyfelfontein, Damaraland enjoy balloonsafari's and
scenic flights in a Cessna 206, Tecnam P92 or microlight. Turn a vacation into
a celebration, stay at unique flying camp, you'll appreciate the
vaste horizons, the multi colored layers of the scenary and best of all:
million of stars and peaceful silence. Wolfgang, born in the eastern cattle
country of Namibia, always dreamt of flying but succeded only later in life, he started as a hanglider, graduating to gliding, then was one of the fathers
of microlighting in southern Africa, he became fascinated by ballooning
because it is so closely related to natural elements, wind and heat, upon
which it relays for flying... and eventually got his commercial hot air balloon
licence in Hamburg in 1995. He is also a commercial pilot, and a commercial
microlight pilot and instructor. Building the flying camp put a heavy demand
on his many other skills...he thought of, assembled and built everything
except the walls, with the help of our two staff members.
But flying remains the love of his life and should you choose one of our
activities you'll experience and share his enthusiasm.
The balloon is launched from a runway at Rag Rock, Twyfelfontein, every
morning just before dawn , you will rise with the sun over the incredible
landscape, slowly gaining a view of the distant blue mountains, the Brandberg
towering like ghost in the mist, the multi colored formations that have
resulted from geological turmoil occurred million years ago when it all
began... a view that goes on forever, primal and unchanged, like the first
day, a rare glimpse of how it was all meant to be... The flight is one hour
plus, floating along in perfect silence broken only by the bursts of 'dragons
breath'..
upon landing you will be greeted with a champagne breakfast and be leisurely
returned to our camp or to your lodge if you're staying elsewhere.
We are closely dependent on the weather as we are carried upon the wind, and
sometimes. If the east wind is too strong , we've had to cancel flights due to
the elements, but luckily it happens very seldom. Minimum of two and a maximum
of eight passengers at a time.
Work on flying camp started in August 2001, with an agreement signed
with the members of Uibasen Conservancy, the owners started with clearing the runway
and erecting the steel structure hangar to shelter aircrafts from the harsh
elements.
