Gobabis
Gobabis is situated on the Wit-Nossob River, 120 km from the Botswana border
at Buitepos. The name is Khoi-Khoi for the "Place of Strife", but a slight
misspelling (Gobabis) would render it "Place of Elephants", which locals
seem to prefer (despite its obvious shortage of elephants). The 1970 farms
of the surrounding Omaheke region cover 4.9 million hectares (an
additional 3.5 million hectares belong to the Hereroland communal area) and
provide over one-third of Namibia's beef. Gobabis is the main service centre
in the region, and is likely to gain prominence as traffic increases
on the Trans-Kalahari route between Windhoek and Botswana's capital, Gaborone.
