Ibenstein has quite a
history to tell. August Stauch, the first person to discover diamonds in
Namibia, then German South West Africa bought the farms Ibenstein, Protea
and Dordabis in the beginning of the 20th century. The farms were divided
between the children, Hans got Dordabis and Marianne went to live in
Ibenstein with her husband Nicolai Krafft, a Russian born engineer and
business man. They used to breed the black diamond, the Karakul sheep. The
pelt was sold and fashionable fur was made out of it. Marianne, being an
artist, started the first carpet weavery in Namibia. Their son Michael later
changed the farming to beef cattle and imported some dual purpose
Simmentaler from Germany. His wife Sabine from Berlin perfected the carpet
factory into a big business.
Hunting activities started during the mid seventies. Michael was a keen
hunter and went to Angola, Botswana and Zimbabwe to hunt plains and
dangerous game. His open mind thinking was the initiation of converting
Ibenstein from a sheep and cattle ranch into a game and hunting ranch. In
the mean time their son Rene has taken over most hunting and farming
activities. Rene and his wife Ilona are now running Ibenstein Hunting
Safaris and Ibenstein Guestfarm. Rene is a full Professional Hunter with
more than 10 years experience.
