Travel south through the rugged mountain ranges surrounding the capital to the vegetated red dunes of the Kalahari Desert.  These dunes differ from the Namib, as they are greener and less stark, having the ability to support more fauna and flora.  In the afternoon you will be able to partake in a sundowner drive and farm drive (optional).

We proceed south to the Quiver Tree Forest near Keetmanshoop where this prehistoric tree reaches skyward with graphically forked branches; their trunks peel and form intricate patterns as the tree matures.  In the vicinity Giant’s Playground is an impressive jumble of massive boulders. (Optional) nature / sundowner drive.

Start the day with a guided excursion to the Fish River Canyon, the second largest canyon on Earth.  Visit the small historic village of Aus and travel through the vast barren expanse to Lüderitz, situated on the southern Atlantic Coast.  The town serves as a good base from which to view colonies of aquatic birds, seals and penguins.  An excursion will be undertaken to view Diaz Cross.

Travel to the famous ghost town of Kolmanskop, where the first diamond was found in 1908. Heading inland we proceed via the pro-Namib to our overnight accommodation establishment.

An early start is imperative, as this is not only the coolest part of the day but the best for photography.  Our journey takes us to the famous Sossusvlei, a clay pan surrounded by some of the highest sand dunes in the world.  Time will be taken to explore the impressive conglomerate gorges of the Sesriem Canyon, with its rock pools fed by the Tsauchab.

We depart the Lodge travelling to Keetmanshoop, founded in 1860 by the Rhenish Mission Society.  The south of Namibia is well know for its Ostrich farming as the environment is particularly suited to farming with these birds. Our destination is the Fish River Canyon, a spectacular geological phenomenon and on the African continent second in size to the Blue Nile Gorge.  En-route guests will visit the Quivertree Forest and Giant’s Playground.

A morning visit will be taken to view the Fish River Canyon.  Travel to Aus where the legendary desert horses may be seen at a Garub, a water point where they can be observed as they come to drink.  Proceed to Luderitz situated on the southern Atlantic Coast with its colonial-style buildings clinging to the rocks overlooking the bay.  The Luderitz area is home to a wide variety of aquatic birds.  A tour will be undertaken through the town and to Diaz Cross, optional helicopter flight to Bogenfels.

In 1908 a railway worker found a sparkling stone amongst the sand he was shovelling – the first diamond was found sparking a diamond rush to the area, Kolmanskop was founded!  Today all that remains are crumbling ruins.  Travelling inland we proceed through the Namib to arrive at our Lodge during late afternoon.

Our journey takes us to the Sossusvlei with its monumentally high dunes; an early start is imperative to view the contrasting and changing colours during early morning light.  Extensive time will be spent in the area exploring the dunes on foot, a must for those wishing to experience an endless vista across the sea of dunes.  Explore Sesriem Canyon, where centuries of erosion have incised a narrow gorge some 1km in length and 30m in depth.  Afternoon nature drive on property.

Departing Swakopmund travel northwards following the coastal road to Henties Bay and on to Cape Cross Seal Reserve, which boasts over 100 000 Cape Fur Seals.  Head inland across the flat, barren plain to the abandoned tin mine of Uis and past the Brandberg Mountain (Namibia’s highest peak).  This is Damaraland with its rugged landscapes, sparse population and great mountains.

Twyfelfontein, meaning ‘doubtful spring’ has been occupied for thousands of years, with its spring attracting herds of game making this an excellent base for early hunters.  The slopes of the area are strewn with boulders; all dotted with thousands of engravings and some ancient paintings, a virtual open-air museum.  Geological features in the area include the Organ Pipes, Burnt Mountain and the Petrified Forest.

Enter the world famous Etosha National Park, where a full day of game driving is enjoyed. The game and birds found here are typical of the savannah plains of Southern Africa.  Herbivores such as zebra, elephant, giraffe, eland, blue wildebeest, gemsbok, springbok, kudu and steenbok abound.  Hundreds of bird species have been recorded, including many migrants during the summer period.  Larger felines are also found, such as lion, leopard, cheetah and caracal, with hyenas, cape fox, and black-backed jackal seen during the early mornings and late evenings.

Visit Lake Otjikoto, which is Herero for “deep hole”.  Depart to the town of Tsumeb which is dominated by the central mine shaft, mining a rich ore pipe for copper, zinc, lead, silver and a variety of unusual crystals for which Tsumeb is world famous, visit the museum.  Continue south through the garden-town of Otjiwarongo and on to Okahandja where the Kavango woodcarvers ply their trade at a large open-air craft market on the outskirts of the town.
