Pomona/Bogenfels 4x4 full day guided tours from Lüderitz
Bogenfels is a rock arch located directly on the Atlantic Ocean to the south of Lüderitz in the Namib Desert and noted for its natural rock formations (hence the name, which means "arch rock"). The main formation is a magnificient 55 metre high arch formation, the highest in southern Africa.
This special 4 x 4 full day guided tour will take you into the “Sperrgebiet National Park”, once a forbidden area, where limited diamond mining activities not seen or accessible are still taking place. You will travel through breathtaking desert landscapes with an incredible variety of Namib desert succulents, many of which are endemic and only found in the area. Sperrgebiet area is considered one of the top "succulent regions" in the world.
The tour includes a visit to the ghost diamond factory and town of Pomona where some of the mining equipment dating back to the early 1900s is still reasonably well preserved. The visit to Pomona feels like a journey to the past - times of German discovery of diamonds in this area, with harsh living and extreme working conditions. To go on this exclusive tour, a special entry permit is required for all tour participants for which application must be made well in advance with copy of the passport. Contact for reservations & detailed information: enquiry form or e-mail.

On this tour you will take in the oxygen-rich air at "Grossebucht" (Large Bay), historical Diaz Cross erected in 1487, where you can watch Cape fur seals, Halifax Island, served as whaling station, WW1 Battlements, Eberlanz Cave, wild rocky pools and beaches, "moon landscapes", old lighthouse and fog horn, flamingos, Cape Cormorants, dolphins and other animals.
En-route you will also pass the second lagoon (natural wetland area), the place where the world famous annual Lüderitz Speed Challenge event is staged.
Luderitz has recently become famous for its annual Crayfish Festival. Contact for reservations & detailed information: enquiry form or e-mail.

While on tour, encounters of the Heaviside Dolphin, unique to this coastline, are common. Another sight is colony of Cape fur seals as well as abundant sea bird life with rare Cape cormorants.
Your professional skipper-guide will share the vast knowledge on history of Bartholomeu Diaz's discovery of "Angra Pequena" in 1488 on the way to the Cape of Good Hope as well as detailed information on the area’s rich sea life and history of Lüderitz.
Catamaran charters are conducted for individuals, groups and incentives as well as scheduled tours but, given the nature, it is weather-dependent. Contact for reservations & detailed information: enquiry form or e-mail.

Lüderitz Town tour
In 1488 Lüderitz was originally named Angra Pequena by the Portuguese explorer Bartholomeu Dias, who stopped here on the way to Cape of Good Hope. The town began its life as a trading post and center of fishing and harvesting of guano from nearby islands.
Heinrich Vogelsang, German, purchased the town and land around it in 1883, on behalf of a wealthy merchant Adolf Lüderitz, from the local Nama Chief, Captain Cornelius Fredericks. In 1884, Angra Pequena was named Lüderitz. Lüderitz enjoyed a sudden and massive prosperity in 1909, after the discovery of diamonds in and around Kolmanskuppe, now Kolmanskop (Coleman’s Hill). During the tour drive through town and see buildings designed and constructed in the German colonial era including "Sand Hotel" in "Area 7" as well as the fishing factory, Felsenkirche, Goerke Haus and Deutsche Afrika Bank which are included in this interesting tour.
The historically rich "Shark Island", once a concentration camp and now a camping site, will be one of stopping points. Contact for reservations & detailed information: enquiry form or e-mail.

Kolmanskop Ghost Town tour from Lüderitz
Kolmanskop (Afrikaans for Coleman’s hill, German: Kolmanskuppe) is the most unique and best preserved diamond ghost town in Africa, if not in the world. It is located in the Namib Desert, 10 kilometres east of Lüderitz. Diamond town was named after a truck driver Johnny Coleman who used to stay overnight in the area. Once a small and wealthy mining town, it is now a popular tourist destination. In 1908, the first diamond was found here by railway worker Levala and soon after the German Government declared a large area as a “Sperrgebiet” (forbidden area) and started to exploit the diamonds. Driven by the enormous wealth of the first diamond miners, the residents built the village in the architectural style of a German town, with amenities and institutions including; a hospital, power station (in Lüderitz itself), school, bowling-alley, theatre, restaurant and sport-hall, ice making factory and the first X-Ray station in the southern hemisphere, as well as the first tram in Africa! Kolmanskuppe also had a railway link to Lüderitz. The mining activities declined after World War I and were ultimately abandoned in 1954. The harsh geological forces of the Namib Desert continue to bury some of the houses in sand and provides for a wonderful experience/tour. Two daily guided tours are on offer: 09.30am and 11.00am. On Sundays and Public Holidays one tour is conducted at 11.00am. Contact for reservations & detailed information: enquiry form or e-mail.
